Orthodontics Dental Insurance

Many people use dental insurance to pay for orthodontics. The costs for dental treatment without insurance is very high, and many dental offices require either upfront payment or a percentage down when treating uninsured patients. Dental insurance can also cover the costs of regular check ups, x-rays, whitening and dental surgery. Not all plans cover orthodontics, and those that do may require patients to follow certain steps before covering those procedures.

The cost for orthodontics

The cost for braces can vary. There is the cost of the initial assessment, which some orthodontists offer as a free enticement. Then there is the first fitting where the braces are attached to the patients teeth. Once fitted, the braces need regular adjustments to make sure the patients teeth continue to straighten. Then there is the cost for a retainer. These are used after brace removal and some types of teeth surgery. They help teeth to stay straight and prevent teeth from going crooked. Some people, such as children, may require additional orthodontics in the future. The price for braces can go as high as $5,000 or more.

Dental insurance and discount plans

Not all dental insurance is created equal. Some have very high deductibles, or percentages that a patient must pay out of pocket before the insurance kicks in. Others have exclusions, or items and procedures that are not covered. There is also a copay to consider. With a dental plan, there is a discount offered. It is incorrect to call it insurance. A company works out an agreement with a dentist or dental company. Its customers are then able to bargain for lower prices.

Dental insurance for orthodontics can help people receive the dental care they need. Consider the costs of deductibles and copays when considering an insurance company. A discount plan is another option to consider.
