What is indemnity dental insurance? Why do some people say that it may not be legitimate?

1. oh i hate this insurance, i have it. it means that you can go to any dentist out there in network or out of network. there are no contracted discounted rates. so your insurance will go off of the dentist usual fees. i had to get a crown that should have been a contracted rate of $600 since they accepted cigna, but since it was an idemnity plan they went by $800 so i had to pay more out of pocket. insurance still covered 50% of the crown, but not at a contracted rate. as far as it not being legitimate i'm not sure what they are talking about. if your dentist charges over what your insurance thinks is "usual and customary" you are stuck with higher out of pocket payment. example my insurance will cover up to $1000 for a crown and they pay 50% of it so i pay the rest of that which is $500. if the dentist normally charges $2000 insurance will only pay $1000 and you are stuck with the 1k bill and most likely paying additional costs out of pocket. while it's better than nothing, it's not all that great.
