Family Indemnity Dental Insurance

Dental insurance is a vital piece of insurance for families. The cost of dental care is on the rise, and the only way to afford to get any dental work done is if the person has dental insurance. Many different companies offer dental insurance, and most medical insurance providers offer the option of adding dental insurance.

Different types of dental insurance

There are several different types of dental insurance. The biggest thing that makes the policies different is the amount of coverage and the waiting periods. Most dental insurance companies stop coverage after the $1,000 mark. Some go as high as $1,500, but not many go any higher than that. The companies that offer the higher coverage amounts usually have waiting periods for treatments. Preventative care does not have a waiting period. Basic care, such as fillings, has a 30 day waiting period. Major care, such as dentures or crowns, usually has a waiting period of 12 to 18 months.

Dental insurance or dental discount program

Dental insurance is a policy that is paid for with a premium each month. A dental discount program may have a monthly payment, but it does not offer coverage for services. For example, dental insurance pays 80 percent of a filling, while the dental discount program offers 20 percent off the total service cost. Insurance is not a discount service. It actually pays the dentist for the work that he or she did on the patient. The dental discount program only offers the patient a discount at the time of service.

Dental insurance is a good policy to have to make dental work less expensive. Dental insurance is better than a dental discount program, since it actually pays the dentist for the work completed instead of offering you a discount. Choose dental insurance carefully by reviewing the waiting periods, deductibles and the total amount of coverage.
